Saint Philomena, an Incredible Saint
Saint Philomena (originally Filumena – “daughter of light”), is a shining symbol of holiness pointing towards God giving us a true example to live our lives and form our hearts.
Her martyrdom was only made possible by deep faith in God and ardent love for Him. That love that conquered self-love, temptations, renounced wealth, pleasures, and honours while suffering all of the pains of her martyrdom.
Saint Philomena, who consecrated her life and virginity to God, and who herself overcame temptation, will intercede for our own purity of heart, mind and body if we ask humbly, persistently, and with faith.
Due to her secret intercessions for souls and her public miracles, St. Philomena earned the name “Great Wonderworker of the Nineteenth Century”.
Sadly, despite her abundant miracles and a good example of a good saint and heroic martyr, the 1961 Congregation of Rites decided to remove her feast from the liturgical calendar.
Nevertheless, we still need the encouragement to pray to St. Philomena not only in our ordinary struggles, but for our more difficult trials. God desires that we fix our eyes upon Him alone, and upon eternity, as Saint Philomena did, because it is in this way that we too will emerge from this life victorious.
Let’s continue to honour her as all the saints (Saint John Mary Vianney, Padre Pio…) and Popes (Pius VII, Leo XII, Gregory XVI, Pius IX, Leo XIII, Saint Pius X, Benedict XV and Pius XI) who had great devotion to her did. We know we can count on her!
St. Philomena, please pray for us!
Here below you will find a picture of a chaplet to St. Philomena, along with the prayers.
